The Continental Gatorskin I'm riding on the back wheel is a bit frustrating.
Backstory
I had new wheels built for this trip: Rhyno Lites laced to a SP Dynamo hub up front and a Shimano in the back. Although these rim are a little bit wider than my previous wheels, I could still use my old Continental Touring Plus tires.
These tires are 700c 28mm, which fits the rim, but is a little to narrow for my trip. I opted for the wider 700c 32mm sized tires and descided the Gatorskins - a foldable touring tire with excellent puncture protection.
Two days in a row, same tiny sliver of metal. I think I'll go with Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires...
Today
Two little dogs were very concerned about my tent and barked at me through the rain fly early this morning. I was already awake, but figured it would be a good time to get up. Dave already made coffee and was conversing with our camp neighbor.
We took down camp and headed over to McDonalds for a cup of coffee - meeting up with Joseph & Paul. McDonalds actually makes a decent cup of coffee - especially for the price and they have free wifi. All four of us sat there glued to our phones updating maps, contacting warmshowers hosts and sharing photos.
Myself, Joseph, Paul & Dave
We said farewell to our fellow bicycle travelers and headed south, riding through endless farmlands.
Then I got another flat. Nothing interesting, except that now I have blisters on my fingertips from dealing with my tires (they are somewhat difficult to put on the rim).
After 55 miles of riding, we arrived at Mike & Karen's house. We pulled up to their house, just at the tail end of a little party they hosted, celebrating the end of tax season (they are tax preparers and so were all the guests). I walked in and they greeted me as if I had known them my entire life.
Both are wonderful people; people I am extremely grateful to meet and enjoy their company. Mike drove Dave and myself around Paso Robles for a little tour and stopped at the Barrel House Brewing Company for a pint.
Tomorrow is a rest day. I butchered one of my front panniers yesterday to make it easier to remove from the rack and plan on doing the same to the other. The modification is a much needed improvement. Other than that, no plans.
